I Pledge Allegiance to the Disco Ball
I've asked for some things for my new classroom
and have gotten some of them.
I haven't gotten the extra bookshelf.
Or the Post It chart paper.
Or an American flag,
large or small.
Instead
when the vice principal
leads the Pledge over the PA system
my class and I face the blue disco ball
I got for $5 at Five Below.
We really like it.
I believe in sparkly objects
that catch and amplify light.
I believe in beauty.
It's a great icy blue color.
I believe in my country
minus the guns, ...
and have gotten some of them.

They Saw Each Other At Art Class
Sabrina dropped that one robe.
She looked over her shoulder at Richard.
They smiled at each other.

Dance night at the school gymnasium
He would go to those dances
He could never get the nerve to ask a girl to dance
Like he would really know what to do when he got out on the floor
He had tried dancing alone in his room and had gotten so embarrassed that he just had to stop
He watched men & woman dancing on TV & movies
They made it look so easy
Women were so mysterious and full of shit
He wouldn't have a clue what to say to one if he ever got the chance
The dances went by and he went to almost all of them
He would find the darkest part of the gym and watch them with his back...

Oh no, they're gone
There's a classroom noise-level app called Bouncy Balls
I had it projected, but the screen went black
A student called out to me urgently:
"Miss! Miss!
You lost your balls!"
I muttered to myself
I hate it when that happens.

She never listened to anybody
This was around the time I was 8 or 9 years old.
I was in the 3rd grade.
The teacher's aid always told her and the rest of us not to stand up on the swing.
She always did it anyway.
She never listened to anybody.
I heard she had a terrible upbringing.
She was beaten by her mother for being mischievous and defiant.
Her father would come home when he wanted to.
He was a traveling salesman.
Supposedly he had two mistresses, with families in Texas & Virginia.
I hated her guts because she always used to chase me home from school, pull my hair...

Back to The Back of the Bus
Move me back to the back of the bus
where the cool kids be
no muss no fuss, just booze and weed
and firecrackers
aimed at tires and seats of open jeeps
move me please
too much heat on the front where a rear view sees
and I am doomed to please
by having all my human cease
let me be as scum and sleaze
cough and wheeze
in the back of the back of the back of the bus
rum and heathens
run your thumb above where drunk chum is sleeping
to find gum...

Modalities
I've been having a hard time with Rod Jesus
(you have to call him by both names)
He's trouble by the minute.
Taking stuff from other students
Blurting out nonsense
Refusing to stay in his seat
Spilling Skittles all over the floor,
smashing them into the carpet with his heel.
By afternoon,
I sometimes lose it.
He's hyperactive
He's also bored
Two weeks into fifth grade,
he's reading below a first-grade level.
Worksheets
may as well be written in Hindi.

The Aliens Have Arrived
Yelling cursing, noise level terror
Then he hits her
She cries
Things get quiet, then it starts again
Locked in his room, the boy sits on the floor next to his bed
That's the place he goes when they go at it
Mother & Alien, this man/boyfriend
This thing that watches TV or it's i-phone and drinks long cans of malt liquor in the dark
Sometimes the Alien is there when his mother isn't
The Alien doesn't talk
The Alien drinks, beats mother & watches TV
The boy knows that he's lucky the Alien doesn't beat on him

Graduation
Graduation was over,
I said what I needed to say.
High school was done forever.
I never had to go back.
I should’ve been happy,
Or maybe sad it was over.
Instead, still in cap and gown,
I sat on my bed and sobbed.
The wave of relief was overwhelming,
I survived.
The flashbacks of how horrible it was…
It was finally over.
But nothing was made right.
The hell I left behind
Was no longer mine.
It was for the next class
And the class after that.
It will continue to torture,
Kill hopes...

Will Never Miss Highschool
I will never understand how anyone could miss those 4 bloody years.
4 bloody years of cramming 7 classes within one day.
4 bloody years of constant pressure to make great grades.
4 bloody years of not knowing who the hell you are.
4 bloody years of being stuck seeing people everyday who likely won't stick by your side when times get tough.
(I know all my friends didn't. Mental illness is just such a bitch to be around, ain't it? Love how you are all out living your lives together without me.)
4 bloody years of not really...

The Schoolboys and the Rastafarian Men (With original Patois quotations)
Two schoolboys, Dan and Josh, attended the Independent City All Age School in St. Catherine. In the evenings, they used to walk through a cane field near the school when they were going home. Many tall coconut trees bordered the cane field. Dan and Josh would cut sugar cane and pick coconuts to eat. In addition to that, they would carry some sugar cane and coconuts home.
The boys had a big problem. They had to pass a construction site on the way home, and some men who worked there would beg them sugar cane and coconuts. If the boys refused to give the men what they asked...

Let's Get One Thing Straight, Kid.
Let's
get one
thing straight, Kid.
I agreed to
pose naked for your
art class project. But you
are not allowed to do things
to me that we know should be known
as nasty and obscene or the deal
is off. Do I make myself clear on that?
