Rules are Roolz
Some rules are good:
no smoking in public places
no littering
no running red lights
no killing people
But some rules are questionable:
insistence on school uniforms
in a low-income school
when mom's been unable to launder navy pants
and white shirts
because dad went to jail last night
or the power was cut off
or because the family of eight has to move again
third time in six months
I'm developing the reputation
as the teacher who doesn't dress code students
(they think I don't notice)
I do...

Your Day to Fart
it has been said
that teachers make 1,000 decisions a day
that number seems low
and then there's...everything else
after lunch (why does math always have to be after lunch?)
i'm writing a math problem on the Smartboard (I love my Smartboard)
i'm thinking about the copies I didn't get to make for Social Studies
about more forms I have to fill out
about the sad, teach to the test ethos permeating the district (and country)
about my new student who does not speak a word of English
joining two others in my class who barely do ...

Hey crazy Texas,
seems you're no longer contented,
with just killing women and girls in the name of pro life
Now you're out to kill the heart of Houston's schools
to kill choices, knowledge, literacy, and joy
You're coming for the libraries.
Under your dystopian plan,
libraries will be turned into "discipline centers"
a place for disruptive students
to learn remotely.

how about teaching those bored, disruptive students
to get hooked on books
and give them time...

The Science Teacher
The science teacher
started to like me around March
I thought it might have been my meatballs
Throw frozen ones in a crockpot with barbeque sauce
Heat on high until nice and hot
Everyone at the potluck will think you're a genius
the science teacher was extra complimentary
I think he ate more of them than he should have
The science teacher has five snakes in his studio apartment
His toe exploded once
Diabetes
Also makes him pee every two hours at night
He hasn't seen his grown children in three years

Last Day of School
I still remember that day like it was just yesterday
He was very excited to attend kindergarten
And there he sat on in the floor with his new classmates
With a bright smile when I snapped a quick picture
He was so little
Friday morning I left home in hurry to run my errands
When later I realized it was his last day of high school

This world is progressing very fast and somehow, I will have to say in the wrong direction, what was once looked upon as moral decenary has been tainted with the new order of comprised political views, or religion depravation. Quiet Quitting
At an age
when friends were starting to retire
i went back into full-time teaching
i don't have a linear brain
i haven't had a linear career
i'm a triple Sagittarius
with ADD
until i was 40
i thought i'd be rich all my life
I haven't had a normal life
but I like to write
and its given me a story
That's nice and everything
but i'd rather have a normal brain
and money
the first year was hell
the next two
bearable
but stressful
going home exhausted
papers needing grading
lesson...

There is a girl that once was cheery,
But growing up made her mood dreary.
She used to wear so many colors,
But now she won’t wear any other.
Black is all that she will wear,
So her classmates start to stare.
Even her nails are painted black,
