Chapter 12: Confronting Shadows
Chapter 12: Confronting Shadows
Brittney returned home before Alex got off from work. She had showered at the hotel after her intimate rendezvous with David, but she still felt imprint of his touch as if it were hanging around her neck.
As Brittney settled into the cozy living room, her mother's eyes sparkled with curiosity, barely contained behind her glasses.
"Sweetheart, you seem different today," her mother remarked, her tone gentle but probing.
Brittney forced a smile, her mind racing to concoct a plausible explanation....

Chapter 11 The Meeting
Chapter 11: The Meeting
Brittney's heart skipped a beat as she read the text from David as her daughters played nearby. She’d read it and closed the phone. It was unexpected and a rush of excitement surged through her veins.
Once she was back home, she stared at the words on her phone screen, contemplating whether to reply or not. Deep down, she knew she had to. After the time they’d shared, she couldn’t leave him hanging.
Her message was short. “I would like to meet and visit. Let me work it.” She felt immediate regret when she pushed send. It sounded...

Chapter 10 - Prayer at the Park
Chapter 10 – Prayer at the Park
David had left early for work. They’d both been tired the night before, but Brittney felt rested after her shower and a little breakfast with her girls. It was a beautiful day and they reminded her they wanted to walk down to the park.
While the Bella and Grace played, Brittney looked at their flexing limbs as they climbed. Bella was 8 years old and Grace, 7. She marveled at the beauty in their faces. How could so much of God be held inside such little parts of his creation, she thought.
She whispered...

Chapter 9 Home
Chapter 9 Home
As the plane began its descent into Oklahoma City, Brittney felt a heavy weight settle in her chest. The city lights below twinkled below like distant stars. She knew this place well, but it felt foreign after being in Kansas City four days.
As she closed her laptop thinking of all the learning from those days, she felt a tangled web of guilt and regret.
She had always prided herself on her faith, integrity, and loyalty. She had been raised with strong moral values, waiting until marriage before sharing herself with her husband, Alex....

Novella Chapter 4:Dinner, Wine, and More
Chapter 4 Dinner, Wine, and More
The evening air was alive with the buzz of conversation and laughter as Brittney found herself seated at a cozy restaurant with David and his friends. The dim lighting and the clinking of glasses created an atmosphere of warmth and intimacy, but beneath the surface, Brittney couldn't shake the gnawing sense of guilt that had been haunting her all day.
As they dined on delicious food and shared stories from their lives, Brittney found herself drawn deeper into the circle of David's friends. They were a diverse group, united by their...

Novella Chapter 3: A Shared Day of Learning
Chapter 3: A Shared Day of Learning
As Brittney entered the large conference hall, the hum of conversation and the scent of freshly brewed coffee filling the air. The first general session was about to begin, and she couldn't help but feel a flutter of anticipation as she searched the crowd for any familiar faces.
Then she saw David standing near the entrance with a smile that lit up his face as soon as he spotted her. Before Brittney could wave to him, he was making his way through the crowd toward her.
"Brittney, there you are!" David exclaimed...

Novella Chapter 2: Unexpected Connections
Chapter 2: Unexpected Connections
Brittney stood in the bustling airport terminal, her heart fluttering with a mixture of excitement and nerves. She was on her way to a professional conference in Kansas City, Missouri—a rare opportunity to immerse herself in the latest developments in her field and connect with colleagues from across the country.
As she scanned the crowd for her gate, she felt a familiar presence at her side. Turning, she saw her husband, Alex, smiling down at her with that same warmth and affection that had drawn her to him twelve years ago.

He was dressed in his finest suit as he lay in his casket under the rotunda. Pat’s Aunt Mercy lay in her bed in a room off the big room. Her name was Pat and her duty was to sneak bourbon and whiskey to get Auntie drunk enough not to cry. She kept Pat on her feet as she went to the kitchen to get Auntie booze. Aunt Mercy ushered in her widowhood with gin and tonic with lime on the rocks. At twenty-one Pat was still girlish but old enough to learn how to mix drinks during a wake. Her bridegroom, Bob, was huddled with the men but quiet as a church mouse while letting...

It Was Time
OK,” I said. “As you wish.”
Who could blame him after 42 years of marriage. Since Michael was paying the tab, I’d comply with his wishes as best I could. I suppose it was natural that he’d want to make love to his wife on her last night. By all indications they’d had a good marriage.
Tanya had recently made the decision to stop all treatments and so it was a matter of time. Her cancer would consume her, and he wanted to spare her from the agony he knew was in her future. He shared that she wanted to live as long as possible but knew her inevitable death...

Sunk Deep in Baton Rouge
Sunk Deep in Baton Rouge
“Hello Pops. Sorry to intrude on my wonderfully studious young man in the middle of deep tort contemplations, but I have a little problem. Our house has flooded. So here I am with no adult assistance with our three-year-old son and the water, water is everywhere to borrow a phrase from Coleridge’s ‘Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner.’ Could you get in that wonderful jalopy your Mom bought for us and take us to dry ground?”
“The car is flooded as well I am afraid. I am at the chapel on campus. Wait just a short while and I am sure the car will revive...

Sugar Festival Night
Sugar Festival Night
“Bob, why do you sit there reading news magazines all afternoon? Wouldn’t chatting with your beautiful wife be more interesting? You did marry me after all. And we are in Turkey. We speak the language. Let’s go out and mingle with the crowd.”
“Pat, I know being home while I am working at the base must get lonely. But I will make it up to you. Tonight we are going to the Sugar Festival.”
“I’ve heard about it from the general’s wife while gardening and being patient for your return as a proper wife should.”
