Coming Out
(on anticipating a father’s response)
perhaps the dark truth is
that you didn’t really care either way
and all my fear was meaningless because
there was no investment from you
that I was just a little kid
you had to clothe and feed
and then felt obligated to
well into adulthood
(provided I made sacrifice)
as per some instinct called love
but which you didn’t really name
because you were just Baal’s ghost
a mocking image of a man

A Backwards View
(on micro-aggressions)
It’s odd to reflect in hindsight on
the little hatreds that emerge
in little words and reassurances.
The Australian teacher who told me
that I should be grateful to be called
a pervert, since wouldn’t gays be happier
if they identified themselves as such?
The same woman who’d say
that certain stereotypes have weight.
(‘In corpses, dear, perhaps’
would be the ungracious reply.)
Who said that Jews
were sometimes greedy Jews,
claiming dental care as charity relief
and then...

A Homosexual's Body
We slant and slouch,
prevaricate of limb,
relinquish wrists
to seeming limp,
allowing air to fold and press.
It's taken me so long to understand...
to feel both queer and beautiful.
To know that I don't need to prove
the simple fact of what I am.

relinquish wrists
to seeming limp,
allowing air to fold and press.
It's taken me so long to understand...
to feel both queer and beautiful.
To know that I don't need to prove
the simple fact of what I am.

The Straights
I always feel their eyes on me.
Wanting to know what I am, how I work,
as if they'd like
to take me apart
and analyse the bloody cogs.
But more than this,
they'd like to fix,
to make me something they
can fuck or kill, or just sit by and watch
as I go up in flames. And light a cigarette,
and grin, and say
"I always knew, of course...
can always tell with poofs."

Winged Eternity
an attempt at a ballad
A simple death was wrought for me
but I've as always been a-strange,
across the worlds of wandering
a-lonesome of the range.
A reckoning was writ in stones
the second I stood out,
alone among the granite bones
and bodies cast about.
The scripture reads that life so queer
can only be wrapped up with blood,
with fetish and of course despair
and not as we proved false the flood.
We stole the scripture and took flight
across the midnight streets,
then said that...
