A Dog's Life
I'm puzzled by the muzzle
they've wrapped around my snout
it must have been because
of those times that I got out
I was only being friendly
while my master wasn't there
but the lady with the baby
started screaming in despair
The farmer with the sheep
went fumbling for his gun
I'd jumped the fence to play
and then I had to run
I couldn't wait to queue
when the butcher's shop
smelled yummy
so I made a quick escape
with a sausage in my tummy
The only thing I've...

Dog Stories and Other Oddities of Fate
Walking my dog Onyx this morning
An hour later than usual
Hit the pavement at 7am
Usually out the door at 6am plus or minus
First dog we engage with is a BIG poodle
Jet black and wearing a cone
Just got spayed yesterday
Dog's name is Sunday
My first city rescue dog is pictured here
Her name was Sunday, we changed it
Ginger became her name
I named her after Ginger on Gilligan's Island A beauty for a beauty
I tell the owner black dogs rule
We chat and I move on ...

I fear that I will always love like a dog.
I fear that I will always sit at your door waiting —
fresh kill in between my jaws
— my canines sunk into the poor thing’s flesh.
“Look at me, I am here. I love you, I bring you kill.”
I fear that I will always love like a dog.
I fear that what we share in temperament —
the quick bite, the quick thrill
— is also what we share in doom.
“We are cut from the same cloth, mirroring one another. your past and my future.”

The Loss
The loss of a pet
hits harder than you expect
when that little soul departs
for the rainbow hill in the sky
you are left with an emptiness
a pain like nothing you have experienced.
An ache so intense
it creates a void in your heart.
But as the days pass
memories start to patch it up
and eventually the chasm becomes a hole.
Stuffed with beautiful comforting moments.
When you remember how intensely they loved you,
how they were a part of your family
as surely as humans are.

DOG
ordinary
as me, this one--
part one thing
and another,
saved
from ruin
and still
aching
for love,
always
waiting,
wanting
there is
nobility
in mongrel blood,
a hybrid
soul
behind eyes
deep
as sky
but brown
as earth
things
said
but not spoken
a heart
designed
to love
as me, this one--

Scene casting 1
In the village, scarcely a mile from a city,
where fumes of cars seem less apparent,
where stars are more visible, the freckles of space,
the nicotiana lingers,
opens pale petals ready
to greet the bleak Moon.
An Atlas moth will hover,
wings half dipping,
dripping in shadows,
partially exposed.
The streetlight will lean,
over a pea-green rover,
made somewhere between
nineteen fifty-eight and seventy-three.
The man who drives it is quiet,
Scottish, five nine,
walks a Red Setter
with sunset to...

Dreary Day
Overcast
All day
I remember my Mom
Latter years
She'd get so depressed
I'd try to cheer her up
Parkinsons Disease though
There was no cheering
Not even a chance
She was so stoic
Sucked it up
No choice
Today reminds me of those days
Pit of the stomach blues
I'll suck it up too
Go pet my dog
Maybe she'll lick my face
She's good like that

If the kindest souls were rewarded with the longest lives,
dogs would outlive us all.”—Anonymous
nor bark nor bite nor wagging of the tail
is why i sit here, waiting to exhale;
kennel defeat by flagrant emptiness
sickens my pooch-lorn spirit to excess.
caninic pain cuts deep—an eagle's claw
unsuturing my nerve ends in the raw:
how could night so conspire such wayward stealth
as robs me of contemporary wealth!
my doggone friend zilched pale as melted air,
with mastiff virtues...

Followed Them To Two Little Pups
Peter went hiking in the woods and saw
paw prints on the ground and... being the
law abiding sort... followed them to
two little pups that he gave to his sister.

Bernard
Bernard's girlfriend no longer looks hot to him. Sure, she's still slim and leggy with that pretty face, but - he hates having to think this - she's just so damn mean.
Simone thinks Bernard is too nice. "You always try to help losers. You're a loser magnet! You don't have to be an effing saint all the time! I should call you St. Bernard!" This delivered not with affection, but an angry sneer; a frightening contortion of her face reminescent of the frustrated nuns of his Catholic school childhood. The 'Saint Bernard' remark marks the first time Bernard realizes he is going...

Observations Come Easy with Dogs
I woke up thinking about love
Affection too
Onyx came over and licked my face
Then we went out to walk
Everyone is polite at that hour
I see Stella and her owner daily
The dogs wag their tails frantically
Jump all over each other
They became fast friends
It's been 4 months now
Observations come easy with dogs
The morning is not complicated
We go out at dawn
People nod and say good morning
Even if we don't know each other
In time we will
That's the morning report
Grateful for each day
Affection too
Onyx came over and licked my face
Then we went out to walk
Everyone is polite at that hour
I see Stella and her owner daily
The dogs wag their tails frantically
Jump all over each other
They became fast friends

Laika loitered in the streets
Sometimes she howled at the moon.
Certain men laid hands on her.
And they robbed her of her eagerness!
She had no plans, the bitch!
She just minded her own business...
So they put her in a cell.
That flew in the sky, so lost!
Lost in the air, in rotation...
She dialogued with loneliness!
In the light of yellow dawn.
The ship would not return to the ground.
They would never get her out of prison.
She decided to become a star.
