doggone

“If the kindest souls were rewarded with the longest lives,
dogs would outlive us all.”—Anonymous

nor bark nor bite nor wagging of the tail
is why i sit here, waiting to exhale;
kennel defeat by flagrant emptiness
sickens my pooch-lorn spirit to excess.

caninic pain cuts deep—an eagle's claw
unsuturing my nerve ends in the raw:
how could night so conspire such wayward stealth
as robs me of contemporary wealth!

my doggone friend zilched pale as melted air,
with mastiff virtues that i so revere;
stark evidence lurks in the vacant leash,
some strange, new habitat his new-found niche.

his swag surfin and sideward somersaults—
perfect dog gestures, even to a fault—
have kept me sane these fifteen thousand years,
my recollections now awash with tears.

bone of contention, marrowed with dismay,
tomorrow will be just another day—
except morn sounds that old, familiar round
that signals i have found my missing hound.
