Street Lights...
Make sure you're home
when the street lights come on.
Bag a lunch, see ya later mom
out the door, gone all day
penny candy and grape nehi
five cent giant Ring Dings stuffed with cream
riding Stringrays...stickshifts and banana seats
Mickey Mantle cards clicking the spokes,
bouncing a pinkie against the curb
playing three outs in the street
pick up games in the empty lot
stickball against the wall
banging rolls of caps, big rock in my hand
catching grasshoppers and bees in a glass jar,
running through woods,...
when the street lights come on.

Even without a poetry site
I'll forever and a day
Continue to write out my rites
And fight my demons
One night at a time
Using insight and foresight
As a tandem to right this warring ship
Cast about turbulent waters
Pledging to become the light borne within
To help guide me back to steady shores
Remembering how bright the sun
Really does shines
Exposing the blight of the soul
Where I take flight
Within the contained knowledge of this self
Tempered with a sage's wisdom
Ascending new hieghts
Running freely...

Continue to write out my rites
And fight my demons
One night at a time
Using insight and foresight
As a tandem to right this warring ship
Cast about turbulent waters
Pledging to become the light borne within

Father
was there a time when gentleness
touched our body and soul as children
was there a time when goodness
and love was felt from his hands
betrayed his spouse and deeply hurt
all the children left sad and distraught
heavy hands with drunken breath
cowering in corners we grieved
we grieved for the death of our love
we cried for the loss of our respect
we mourned his untold despair
for his unhappiness and shame
his short affairs to assure himself
his abusive ways to show control
sadly he lost us all
as we...

Clasping Memories
I clasped
Onto my memories
As if they where the only thing of value
A favourite broken toy
I couldn’t discard
Played with them like a child
Rebuilding a world
Where I could smile again
A sweet innocence I thought had died
Now rekindled a reborn flame
Often wondered where he went
As the years rolled on
His playfulness faded
But he held on to my shadow
Hoping I would remember him
I clasp these memories tight
For in them is me
The true me
The little boy who never gave up ...

My Loving Mum.
My loving Mum if short of cash
or needed a dish at a dash,
cooked an ancient delicate dish
(I'm drooling as I think of this)
of Yorkshire's gorgeous corned-beef hash!
Who brought this to a pre-teen bash
served with her silvered-spooned panache,
and got from doubters their sheepish kiss
My loving Mum!
Singer's sang of bangers and mash
or lauded stewing like goulash,
both fine for those merely peckish ...

Hymn to the Maiden
There are fields in the mind
endless fields stained in gold
where I’d lay in the harvest,
stalks erect beneath the sun
listening to the gentle chatter
of seeds shivering in their husks.
Anglia grew wheat, and hops
and rapeseed. Settlements
built on boggy fens and
Roman rule
and so I’d lay gazing at the sky
dreaming of coins and rings
and treasures laying dormant
inches below the soil, thinking ...

freedom tastes like today
Your laughter
is the embodiment
of the perfect Spring day
a bright sun breeze tusseling
your dark curls
For just a moment
this is a snapshot
of an uncomplicated childhood
the kind Hollywood makes
pretty movies about
For just a moment
I remember what it was like
to spin carefree in the sun
wet green grass under my feet
and believe there was no greater
freedom than right there and then
with laughter spilling from me
full of a lightness I've never found
in adulthood
...

Reminiscing
long ago when at the start
of life, when I was born,
breathing with a beating heart
simplicity the norm...
the wonder of the morning light
the warmth of my mum's love
sparkling stars in sky at night
moonbeams from above
embraced by water's warm caress
pillows, blankets too
awed and thrilled by more or less
anything I could do...
wordless thoughts which came and went
like visions in a dream
feelings seeming heaven sent
flowing in a stream
of neverending days and nights
awake and too...
