Grapes
As I coast down the road,
The temperature says it's 102 degrees outside,
Blasting my music and the A.C.,
It's a nice drive.
But then I notice the fields,
They're out there picking grapes,
In the blistering heat.
I look in the mirror,
At my brown face,
Thinking I was given the opportunity
to get an education,
to find a comfortable life,
Yet those migrant workers
Out there earning a living
Must have dreams and aspirations of their own,
To give their daughters and sons a chance.

She feeds nations but fails to breast feed her own
she is the epitome of wealth,my Africa
But they will not let her harvest her own
She has endowed her children with knowledge
Ask about the brain drain
Yes,she is beautiful, beauty packed and sold
beauty that does not at all benefit her
They know how to crawl in
they called it 'development loans'
sunk her in so deep in debt she can barely float
Africa, the land that once thrived on authenticity
The land that the Creator blessed with so much melanin
Her children now scrap it...

Can we guess how hard that road to tread
to where the seeds of inspiration lead
the cramp before you spread your wings
the stones they threw of words that sting
The civil rights of Black and White
Wikipedia I read between the lines
a resume that few can match
of sparks that flew to ring the change in time
From modesty the caged bird fledge
but not to fly but to sing instead
challenge them and shake the world
born again not once but three or four
Cap and gown tread the halls renowned
the doctorates...

Upon stolen sand
When you come, I'll bathe you
in the holy water of a lionness
stalking in the blackness
of a harsh, slumbering Sun.
As you come upon your prized pyre,
offering the embers of oldest fires,
burning the paws of my beast brutally,
singing retellings under our shared Moon, I growl and hiss and spit at you.
In this wasteland, where we roar our truths from mountaintop,
for the ones before and the ones to come, and the ones that never were,
I weep.

The Lesson ( after Maya Angelou )
I was conceived by a bloodline
of warriors: Jew and Cherokee;
I'm certain if we draw deep
there is also African American
Thus, "abandon" is not a word
existing in my ancestry—
neither does "quit"
though definition appears equal
Maybe they are, technically
according to the dictionary—
but, one slices more personally
as part of our humanity
I am no quitter despite suffering
having swallowed the streets;
I never...

Fox News turns
clock irrelevant
as night and day
meld into fear.
If no surprises from the
current King’s reign
nor no left-leaning bastion unseated,
certainly then we should expect
to see more poor immigrants,
to read faces of rapists
in those of the desperate.
Why must they be so
Brown?
What could they be after?
My comfortable home
shutters in around me.
The land upon which it sits
moans in ancient tongues
of those long before.
Why do Brown people still ...

STILL I RISE
I use my creativity to rise above all negativity
I'm only interested in upliftment and positivity
I'm trying to keep all negative energy far far away
Worldly forces attempt to steal my peace everyday
As I lay down crosses that I use to bear on my back
Luciferian agents keep trying to put them all back
I've racked up mileage on a body that's now weary
But my protective deflector goes by the name of poetry
Vigilantly she stays on guard protecting me from harm
Giving me the strength to maintain some semblance of charm
Shadow boxing...

I didn't know you and wished I’d met you
I imagine being in the very presence of greatness an
Absorbing all the knowledge imparted to me
like a sponge soaks up water
You sparked a fire in me of creativity that began
to smolder like a damp camp fire
and eventually turned into a blazing
forest fire all because the words you wrote
reminded me of the mighty woman that
I am and what I can do
The very essence of who you are always came through
Your poems like a steady soaking rain
Water the mind and soul like a dry
and thirsty land

The light of your life and your writes will forever shine on us.
You were my idol, and the greatest poetess on my list.

Maya Angelou – thanks for everything!
By Stanley Collymore
You were indefatigably the inspirational, tremendously
comforting and consistently reassuring beacon that
ceaselessly and enlighteningly shone into the
individual and collective lives of many,
providing the incandescent light that
brilliantly illuminated what would otherwise
have been the inky blackness of night
that pervasively enveloped the
treacherous rocks around
them in a churning sea of
despair and forlorn
hopelessness.
Acute dangers that were themselves attendant

To Maya... with love
She was Regal...
In her ways...
In her walk...
In her words....
Yes Maya Angelou's
words touched
places in me that
I deemed unreachable...
Her Biography's and poems
touched the darkest parts of
me...and made my soul...
Teachable
Maya said...
"If someone shows you who they are...believe them"
Those are words I've
lived by from the first moment
I heard her say them...
So poised Maya was
with every gesture
reminding me of what
it means to be a Lady
To have dignity......

Great soul
Maya Angelou has died and we mourn a great soul. Those of us who have read her poems and books know the phenomenal mind she has and know her journey has been one that is remarkable. While we flood our news feeds with her quotes, tributes to her and appreciation of her work; many of us continue to lead cliched lives that are a carbon copy of another. We praise a woman that stood out during her lifetime yet in our very attitudes and how we live our lives, we go against the work that she and countless others have put in place in the fight for equality for not only our skin colour but as people,...
