A Night Like This

- A Night Like This -

A Song about Love and Death

On a night like unto this, when the wind did howl…
And the trees swayed like dancers in their grace,
I saw swiftly descending, a snow-white owl…
With wings spreading wide and delicate as lace.
Flying ever higher with the spirits of the night,
Searching everywhere, for that perfect height.
A messenger of powers that no longer reign…
Searching for wisdom, whilst ignoring the pain.

Wings of the night, making my spirit to soar,
I cannot forget what I have been searching for.
Wings of the night, dispelling all the light,
I may have done wrong, but I fight for right!

On a night like this, when the land was dark…
And the ancient things came to prey on the weak,
A black cat screeched and a hound did bark…
With voices crying out, both terrible and bleak.
Rising ever higher with the spirits of the abyss,
My spirit went looking for a fair maiden to kiss.
A messenger of dreams that cannot ever die…
Searching for love, whilst learning how to fly.

Wings of the night, making my spirit to rise,
I cannot forget how I have paid such a price.
Wings of the night, dispelling all the doubt,
I may be crazy, but I will not pout; I will shout!

On a night like this, when a mad song played…
I was caught up in the air like an infernal succubus!
The knights of the night were darkly arrayed…
They guarded the hall of the queen of darkness.
So many pretenders were there to her throne,
Now they all sit beneath her in the piles of bone.
A messenger of twilight collects the damned…
Searching for sinners, whilst acting as planned.

Wings of the night, making my spirit to descend,
I cannot forget how I was told this could all end.
Wings of the night, dispelling all of my sorrow,
I may not be a prophet, but I have seen tomorrow!

On a night like this, when I was so very young…
Looking for love, like some thief prowling the mist,
I heard the mad, mad song that was being sung…
I came before the queen, and by her was kissed.
Running in the hallowed places no one has seen,
Searching for compassion in a world grown mean.
A messenger of powers that no longer reign…
Searching for true love, whilst hiding all the pain.

Wings of the night, making my spirit to hide,
I cannot forget how it was where the dead abide.
Wings of the night, dispelling all the glamour,
I may not be a rock star, but I hear the clamor!
