The Greatest Pain on Earth
Tidy tinsel trolling through the tree
Love and lace is lighting up
My home on Christmas Eve
Presents packaged, pretty and pale
Pastels and whites against a deepest green
The deepest green is he who loves a gift that can be held
Cookies, cakes, and cranberries
Collard greens and pie
Dancing down my gullet ‘til I think I’ll explode and die
Sifting, sorting, season’s settings
Nativity and canes
Warmth and winter – opposites
As happiness and pain
Ever erasing early embers
Of a Christmas cheer
Is looking across the table’s dressing
At my father’s empty chair
Love and lace is lighting up
My home on Christmas Eve
Presents packaged, pretty and pale
Pastels and whites against a deepest green
The deepest green is he who loves a gift that can be held
Cookies, cakes, and cranberries
Collard greens and pie
Dancing down my gullet ‘til I think I’ll explode and die
Sifting, sorting, season’s settings
Nativity and canes
Warmth and winter – opposites
As happiness and pain
Ever erasing early embers
Of a Christmas cheer
Is looking across the table’s dressing
At my father’s empty chair
