if I could be like that

He spends his day
Sitting on the bench watching the other kids play
With their parents and he says
If I could be like that I would give anything
Just to live one day in those shoes
And I sit next to him and say
If I could be like that
I would to
And smile down at him
He smiles up
And we connect
Children of circumstance
Destiny feels bad enough to care
After it took everything away
But the clothes I wear
If I could be like that
How I once was
I would give anything
He smiles up and says let's go
And I know everything will be alright
She spends her day walking
Staring at couples
And whispers if I could be like that
I would do anything
To live a day in those shoes
And I grab her hand and say
If I could be like that
It would be with me and you
He spends his days laying in bed
He's forgotten his name
And I sit next to him
And think of the man I once knew
And now
If I could be like that
I would give anything
To have lived a day in this great mans shoes
And I would give anything to have him back
