The Torchbearer
Deep
within the ocean's heart
light is scarce
yet sometimes rare
—a little angler fish’s torch
illuminates
the darkness there
A fishing lure
it softly sways
temptation
in an endless haze
so seldom seen
amid the dark
a false beacon
of appetite
Her humpbacked nature
in eerie depths
where silence holds
its secrets tight
this strange visage
both fierce and shy
a fish of fables
with haunting rites
Its world
a place of liquid ink
where ancient currents run
beneath
a ghostly melody
no human ear
will ever know
nor voice ever sing
This creature of nature
—not lost but true
a marvel hidden
from our view
revealed herself
within our sight
lured to death
by a brighter light
Choosing to die
as she had lived
to free herself
from karmic debt
within the ocean's heart
light is scarce
yet sometimes rare
—a little angler fish’s torch
illuminates
the darkness there
A fishing lure
it softly sways
temptation
in an endless haze
so seldom seen
amid the dark
a false beacon
of appetite
Her humpbacked nature
in eerie depths
where silence holds
its secrets tight
this strange visage
both fierce and shy

Thank you. I felt a push/pull energy when writing this after meditating about her journey to the surface.

The shorter lines have me thinking about an Emily Dickinson re-read:)

Did you see that movie a few years back where she was portrayed by Cynthia Nixon?
I loved it.

I know, right?
That had to be pretty rough living in the long melancholy shadow of the Civil War, and mortality was always on everyone's mind anyway due to communicable diseases.

I think what broke my heart the most was the minister moving away. The only man who supported her. I will always believe that the letters and poems her sister burned were of him.

Your poem is inspiring to read. Who knows what secrets haven't even been discovered yet. There's an entire world waiting beneath the sea. You concentrated on, and gave this fish a story and personality. I enjoyed reading it.

Thank you. I believe every creature has a soul and a purpose on earth, regardless of how high the mountain or deep the ocean, or if we're ever made aware of their existence. I'm glad you enjoyed it.

Congratulations. You wrote the best poem for the ugliest fish in the sea! Now I think I like the little guys! Actually, this is a great "conservation" piece you wrote. Bringing awareness like it does. It's a great write, too.

Haha! I, too, was taken back by her looks at first. But you can believe they serve some purpose that we may never uncover. Thank you for the 'bringing awareness' notation—that is actually one of my purposes in life, according to astrology, of course.
I appreciate your observations mucho.

Thank you, Grace. I knew I'd most likely hear from you on this one, being how you connect to nature quite deeply. And you're very correct in that this can be applied to so many scenarios. xo

There's a whole universe under the surface of the sea, much we don't even know about. Love this tribute to the angler fish, I learned a lot about them :-)
Off topic: a few years ago I watched "My Octopus Teacher" Such an amazing and deeply moving documentary. I think you might love that one - though it's possible you already watched it. Amazing poem, dear Ahavati 💕

I agree, Duende. I would not be surprised if there were kingdoms we'd never discover. The little angler's ability to rise without succumbing to the pressure is an amazing testament, to me. If something so small can rise fathoms through crushing pressure, then so can we.
I loved "My Octopus Teacher". I recommended it a year or so ago in the "Recommend a Movie or Documentary" thread.
Thank you, Dear Duende. xo

Thank you, Uma. I totally believe it was the little angler's spirit and determination to rise through unimaginable circumstances that inspired me so. It's amazing, to me, how she also escaped predators, particularly with her little light drawing attention through the hazy waters of the deep.
Nope, death is never death but another doorway.
Thank you, Sweet Friend, for such an inspiring competition. I had been captivated by the story and wanted to write about her. Your comp gave me the chance. xo

Thank you, Dear Anne-Ri, I love the notation on clairvoyancy. I believe if we focus on something long enough, especially in nature, that we actually connect to their spirit. Yes, water and memory are always connected.
I've been studying the effects of shapes being placed into water then frozen to reveal those very shapes. There's much more but I'll stop now!
Thank you so much for the well-wishes. I was just grateful for the inspiration to write about her. xo

Pretty amazing how you were able to bring beauty amidst the darkness of this ocean's creature and brought him to light (so to speak).

Love this :) A very spiritual write you have given us to read and take in to our very souls. You know I am very spiritual myself so with that you know how moved I am with this and with the lesson to be learned with this poem. We as a people could learn so very much from nature if we choose to do so. It amazes me with how so many choose to let their very being be closed off to the beauty of life and of the lessons we could learn by taking in life, learning from animals, etc. instead of being so obsessed and locked in with this life of business and monetary gain. I find it quite sad and quite an empty way of living. As you mention, this is not all there is to life and this existence, this dimension is not all there is to life either. So many cannot take the time to just open up their minds and their spirits to all of the treasure, the beauty that life gifts us with each and every day. They choose to close their minds and spirits in this rather cold as said monetary way of living. Excellent writing as always my friend :)

Thank you, Michael. I completely agree regarding nature. She is our Mother, and the dust we will return to once this life is over. We are a part of her and her a part of us. She is our greatest teacher in regard to the cycles of birth, life, and death.
My tribal ancestors say that the white man has lost touch and connection with nature; thus, power and greed have taken root in his heart. Nothing could be closer to the truth.

I suffer a strange combination of love for all things oceanic, as well as all things thalassophobic. This story really resonated with me when I heard about it. I wonder if our little explorer suffered the same condition regarding all things land-related. Of course, everything on Earth was under the ocean at some point.....and with any luck, will be again lol

Thank you! I am a water baby so LOVE the ocean. I lived in Myrtle Beach a few years when I was very young. It was my first memory so always feels like home when I visit.
Strange though, I am terrified of dark water. You couldn't get me to dive off a boat in the ocean for all the money in the world! But I'll happily float on top of it!
