The Duel
Shattered in fragments of despair
Bleeding out amidst the negativity
Dark figure returns an empty stare
Spending precious time in captivity
Kindred spirts begin a verbal spar
Debating over this faint existence
Always picking at the freshest scar
Within a form of subtle persistence
Course words snarl in spite
Matching wits for this soul
Claiming my own birthright
In a lifelong duel for control
Bleeding out amidst the negativity
Dark figure returns an empty stare
Spending precious time in captivity
Kindred spirts begin a verbal spar
Debating over this faint existence
Always picking at the freshest scar
Within a form of subtle persistence
Course words snarl in spite
Matching wits for this soul
Claiming my own birthright
In a lifelong duel for control
Author's Note
Late night musing. The duel inside is good versus evil, that's what makes it a constant till you leave this world. Appreciate you.

Well written my friend. Everyone in society is dueling to be the best. Even if it takes to stab or shoot a loved one to get ahead. Sad. Nicely said!

The ultimate duel. It's ongoing & each side takes the win in different battles. But the war doesn't end. An easy keeper for me. Thank you for sharing

This gives me a Clint Eastwood vibe.
The good, the bad, and the ugly.
Great accompanied pic - even the color tone.

hello dearest Damian I like your choice of photos... you know it has been told to me by the Spirit that he had to conquer the dark in himself before he proceeded to create anything... I wonder if this is a constant? as we as artists after the first artist continue to evolve in seeing what is true and bearing our moral compass and what we are to endure to learn...do we have to keep facing this diverse emerging selves always? I like the thought process here...

I think the battle between good and bad is innate to society and us human beings. There's no good without bad, no light without dark. Love this piece, Damian.

Dear D,
Very interesting subject matter. It provided quite a flurry of thought on my end. No conclusions however, other than if I’m not dueling within my own head with myself, it’s the entire universe dueling with each other. Either way, it’s exhausting. Your poem has such an intricate perspective in that it’s reflective and respectful at the same time in pointing out this universal trait. Terrific writing. H🌷
