October Poems 2024 >> october praise
A poem for each day of the month in which I was born
October 05
october praise
a day of rest and gladness for my soul,
no toil of earth attendant on my breast,
i lie awake and watch the sunlight roll
out of the east, to kiss the mountain crest.
i hear a joyful sparrow court the morn
with airs he has rehearsed the whole night long;
his tremolos the concert hall adorn,
their latitude resplendent with glad song.
the pine trees worship, stately, in their march
to fetch pine cones above the bramble brush,
lest, when the bamboos form their handclasp arch,
they are defeated by the sky-wind rush.
the sanctuary bids me to his pews,
that i may, from the crush of life, escape;
in messages of hope find i my muse,
upon whose altar eden takes new shape.
‘tis Sabaoth in heaven and in earth,
october praise by august spirits raised
to fill hope’s fountains with abundant mirth;
for He who made this day must yet be praised.
