Scrat
The lengthening shadows rule
now that summer is gone
and autumn plays the weather fool
as raindrops soon respawn.
There's a streak of cold in the breeze
as squirrels gather nuts
to stash them in the drowsy trees
for nibbles into gluts.
Though winter might not be so bad
the nut fat must be packed
under the fur by which they're clad
as peanut heaps are smacked...
smacked by a constant nervous chew
reducing nuts to paste...
so quickly, that for me and you,
would leave no time for taste!

Our yard turns into a tiny wild kingdom when several of them compete with the scrub jays for the peanuts.

I like how this is teeming with life, and the whimsical style is great too.
I am sorely missing the NW. Can't wait to visit my sister in Portland for Thanksgiving. I hope it rains the whole time.

Dear MS,
I enjoyed the animation in this piece. For me, there is excitement and anticipation in the coming season to which I am looking forward. Wonderful subject and as always the style you write is fabulous. H🌷

The title was inspired by my youngest kids favorite Pixar character.
Autumn is easily my favorite season and so far the weather this year has been an especially good mix🌦️

I love the soft imagery of this. There's a 250 year old pin oak beside me and I watch the squirrels daily through my office window.

That sounds like ideal working conditions.
I love big oak trees.
Have you ever heard of Herne's oak?

I have, particularly when I lived in England. But I never really knew if the legend was true or not.

Wikipedia says that It is first mentioned in The Merry Wives of Windsor (1597).
Somewhere I read that Shakespeare most likely wrote that play at the request, or command, of Elizabeth The First, which is why the title characters are the only competent ones, making it one of history's better girl power moments.
There's an early 80's BBC version with a young Ben Kingsley as one of the husbands.

I have a tree right outside my bedroom window. Sometimes I watch those little guys go up and around the trunk. They're so agile and fun to look at.

They are very adorable, but I learned to feed them from a distance when one of the little rascals bit me thinking I had a peanut in my hand.
I shoulda seen it coming.
Live and learn:)
