selfish
Put a pane of glass
between us and we'll
dance to our dysfunctions
like you're my mirror image
and I'm yours
You take
I take
you push
I push back
I pull away
you pull away
The atmosphere
trembles between us
electric
like the fracturing calm
before the storm sets in
and these days
there's always a storm
waiting on the horizon
I snap
you snap
I raise my voice
you raise your voice
we both cower
and dance into the chaos
because we both can't be wrong
I slam a door closed
you follow like I won't
break your fingers to keep
you out
The mirror breaks
we're our own bad luck
lovers at war with nothing
but the lies we tell ourselves
I'm always right
I'm always wrong
I'm never right
I'm never wrong
You take
I take
you push
I push back
I pull away
you pull away
We're always selfish
waiting for the other to break
the angry silence that falls
I lie down in the other room
count down the seconds
until you crack open the door
apology on your tongue
Reverse it
it's my hand on the door frame
I say sorry
in quiet tones
when I mean
forgive me for being broken
Switch it back
it's your hand on the door frame again
you say sorry
in quiet tones
when you mean
please don't leave me
You wrap your arms around me
and breathe
I wrap my arms around you
and breathe
our heads resting
on the shoulder of
each other's selfish love
between us and we'll
dance to our dysfunctions
like you're my mirror image
and I'm yours
You take
I take
you push
I push back
I pull away
you pull away
