If I'm Jim Reed, I would;d be asking "what makes you think it really is undercover work"?

My take she was either working undercover in that she was hiding it from the police, or twisting the interpretation of the word, that she was on an undercover assignment to spy on the underworld by working at a joint in their patronage.
