As long as you live

I know it’s hard
To get past this shadow of the past
The times you screwed up
The times you caused harm
And couldn’t go back and make it right

I know it’s hard, and that you would rather forget
But here is a secret
It’s not about forgetting
It’s about knowing

That you never know what there is left for you to do
Even if it’s just a smile directed at someone who needs it
Even if it’s just a word at the right time
Or a verse
Or a look
Or a gift
Or something else entirely

Big or small, it all matters
Don’t torture yourself by believing it doesn’t
May you know this all your life
And especially in your darkest hour:

As long as you live
You have something to give

I need to remind myself of this every now and again, so it is kind of a poem written to myself, but I published it here because I think it might resonate with others as well.
