Two Unlikely Friends

Death and Life met in passing...
Life said "I have a question that needs asking"...
 
"Ask" said Death...
 
"How do you do it, taking souls?"...
 
"I do not choose the day nor the hour.."
"Sadly I'm given this destructive power.."
"I'm but a bridge between heaven and hell.."
"To them all I say is", "I bid thee farewell.."
 
"I couldn't do it" said Life...
"I'd lose my glow"...
"Giving life is all I know"...
 
"My name may be Death"...
"But I am so much more"...
"For to Heaven I can hold open the door"...
 
Life pondered...then said...
"But I've never seen you there?"...
 
"I never step inside" said Death...
"I'm not meant to be there"...
 
Life replied "I don't understand"...
 
 Death said "I was created to help cross souls over"...
"If need be I also bring closure"...
 
"I understand now" said Life...
"I'll look for you when new souls arrive!"
"For in Death they are made new!
 
"But what about the ones who don't make it?"......
 
Death hung his head.....
"I take them for a walk through a meadow"...
"With flowers of every color"...
"I make sure they understand why"...
"Some knew nothing but suffering"...
"Sadly it leads to that door"...
 
Life was listening with tears in her eyes..
 
"I want to give them one smile, a memory to have, I know they'll need it where their going...that's the door that I hate opening"...
 
"I feel less guilty, though their choices weren't mine..."  
"I feel they deserve at least some peace of mind"...
 
When Death had finished, he let slip a tear...
Life caught it, and said...
"this will be the soul of a new Life this year".
 
"They will help people who have no one in the end"...
"They will be a gentle friend"...
"with a humble heart"...
"Whose there in the end"...
 
Death smiled and nodded his head...
He said "thank you" and they parted ways...
"I'll see you soon, some time today"...
 
Life said "well talk again, my new dear friend".....
