The Journey Of A Thousand Miles…

there are blind teachers
deaf musicians
rich philanthropists

physically impaired geniuses
impoverished
philosophers

survivors of cancer
war genocide
natural disasters

addicts who become lawyers
killers who become ministers
children who speak to the world

there are people who sit
in the same chair
day after day

complaining

i’m sad
i’m lonely
i’m broke

i’m not rich enough
i’m not educated enough
my skin’s the wrong color

are you a locked rock?
go outside for one minute
easy right?

each day stay outside
one minute longer
easy right?

in a year you’re spending
365 minutes (six hours and five minutes)
under the sun

depressed?
repressed?
suppressed?

i’m sick
i’m a victim
the system is broken

are you a bored board?
walk one step
easy right?

each day go
one step further
easy right?

in a year you’re walking 365 steps
(1095 yards-
almost eleven football fields)

depressed?
repressed?
suppressed?

the sun
is going to burn out
(in a few billion years)

i have bad karma
the apocalypse is coming
aliens are after me

are you a bedroom mushroom?

listen to a favorite song
each day listen to one more
easy right?

in a year you’re probably
dancing your socks off
right?

are you a fearful fussbudget?
read one page of a good book
easy right?

read one more
page a day
easy right?

in a year you’re reading  a book a day
(more than most phds)
if you’re that much smarter

will you still be

depressed
repressed
suppressed

if you’re
walking that far
reading good books

listening to tunes
dancing outside
six hours a day?

will you have time to be

depressed?
repressed?
suppressed?

are you a sofa spud?
you don’t have to be
it’s easy right?

when will you
stop complaining
stop making excuses

and take a step?

Author's Note
When someone says “I can’t “ in my mind I hear “I won’t “ or “I’m choosing not to…”  usually followed by “ because…” the long list of “reasons” which I hear as  “excuses”.  The other thing I hear a lot is “I know I should” in my mind followed by “but I have chosen not to…” because…”list of excuses…”
Sometimes the first step is getting out of bed, brushing your teeth, taking your medicine, finding a support group or eating more veggies. The key is to stop thinking and start doing.
If we look for excuses they’re easy to find, but guess what, if we spend the same energy looking for solutions we usually find them.
