Because I could not pause for Words

After Emily Dickinson:

Because I could not pause for Words―
They kindly paused for me―
The Pages held but just Ourselves―
And Vibrant Poetry.

We knew no Prose―our Verses chaste
Had safely put away
Long Sentences and Paragraphs
And every wild Essay―

Verse into School where Children played
Their Nursery Rhyme Ring-Ding―
Would feed the Young and Curious Minds
New Lyrics they can sing―

I'd rather not discuss what Inks
And Quills and Parchment Blends―
Will render best my Metaphors
And swift Enjambment ends―

Parse me before the Lyric Mix
Of Whose Iamb i am―
Cinquain and Sonnet, Ballad, Ode,
Haiku, and Monogram―

And when, Post-centuries, the Page
Runs out of things to say―
The Summary of my last Essence
Shall light the Newborn Day.
