Poems about the Power of Words
#PowerOfWords
Poems about the power of words, and the ability for words to influence human behavior. Whether it's the power of words to hurt and abuse, or to empower and motivate, words have been demonstrated in science to affect the emotions and actions of others. Here you'll find poems exploring the power of written and spoken words on the writer, other people, and wider society.

Upon looking back to the vaunted past
wherein language beheld itself
in a stiffly formal manner
stringent in such chastising structure
to approach a matter by complex manoeuvre
in order to maintain sensibilities.
lest such wording offends.
And then compared
to modern lazy trite
rushing to mere grunts
and primal sounds
so unbothered by form
and just shit scrawls
compared to using a varied palette of the past
May the gods make sure this doesn't last.

It doesn't add up!
There's a topsy-turvy place
where time runs backwards,
numbers aren't what they seem;
logical rules apply,
but not the logic we're used to.
There's a wonderful place
where I've just aged backwards
because forty-seven is less than forty-six.
Nothing is something,
zero is bigger than one million,
yet the best gift
turns out to be worthless.
In this place,
women are valued more highly than men,
but children are valued most of all.
The greatest rewards
come from working with those that seem,
on first...

Finds solace
Who is unable to swing wide the door,
Finds solace by the window's perch,
The door to reality, firmly locked,
Encased within the shackles of sadness.
Every attempt to unlock it brings pain,
A searing ache of disappointment and parting,
Thus, I chose to take a leap of faith,
Through the window of letters, I soared. ...

In Plain Sight
On holiday in Lisbon, going round the zoo,
I suddenly remembered that I had a job to do.
I had to write with some aplomb, as soon as I could;
with so much going on, gracious me would it be good?!
Well, I'd already had rum, so while I sat down to think,
I ordered ravioli, nicely washed down with more drink.
It was an urban joke, being so very sleep-deprived;
Inspiration really lagged, but regardless, it arrived.
To finish this, I had to have a stab, late at night.
When my phone began to buzz, it heralded the light.
Although my work...

A Screaming Wind
His voice hurts her ears.
Piercing.
A mouthy earring.
Dangling,
on the edge of being silenced.

Laptop malfunction
Oh no!
My laptop is faulty
and I don't know what to do!
A button split
but I must still work.
It's NaPo month;
how can I fix this situation?
Wait... what?
How daunting!
So you want a submission
without that symbol?
Is this an instruction,
Or an invitation, huh?
Huh?
You should know by now
that I will find this a cool opportunity
to play with words,
particularly if a minority of individuals
think it is too difficult!
On first sight, I concur that it's tricky,

My old poetry
In the depths of my old poetry,
I find a tinge of melancholy,
Lines filled with pain, sorrow, and ire,
Echoes of my struggles, my desires.
Reflecting on the decades gone by,
Contemplating life's parade passing by,
Faces fading, wandering and lost,
Decisions shaping who I am at any cost.
Voices whispering within my mind,
Some laughter, some tears, intertwined,
...

Musical meanderings 2: When in Germany...
Bedhead chef fed Dad a bad cabbage!
Dad had a headache; he defaced effaced baggage.
Aged hag aced cha-cha-cha;
begged a faded cab; ha-ha-ha!
Egghead had a deaf cad fed;
beheaded beach babe gagged, caged, dead!
Badged bee dabbed a hedge-edged beach caff;
each dag faced a cabbaged gag gaffe.
Feed each deb a bagged beef fadge;
heed facade ahead; cede beaded badge.

Astral Gibbon Cub
(for National Scrabble Day)
I'm stuck in a game of Scrabble
and I don't know how to get out!
The game just isn't going well
and so I'm scrabbling about,
trying to find a winning word
without committing fouls,
but that is pretty hard to do
because I've got no vowels!
Do you think VRCX would do,
or FXGG would count?
I know that they're not valid words,
but they'd score a nice amount!
Wait - there are two-letter words
that also score quite well.
Maybe EX or XI or XU
will get me out of this hell.
Oh no....

Dormant as winter
vital like snow
I have long walked barefoot
through these herbariums
dismembering embers
while rain casts candle glow
If I were to call you
a unicorn of the universe
an aristocrat anarchist
or simply a channeled “beared Ishtar”
you would curse me with sin bewitched enchantment
telling me how you despise this title meaning divine madness
how personification reveals each chain
“do not define me ” you would add
I would remind you how you said “wit is a gesture of...

Wordipple
One hateful,
derogatory word
said with anger, prejudice, or spite,
can alter the course
of ones life
Weaving threads of
shame, resentment, and vindictiveness into the fabric of
our populace
ever weakening,
word by word by word
any hope for peace.
Take time to ponder
the short and
long term consequence
if tempted, perchance,
to hurt or bring low
another soul with a word
Better to replace a malignant utterance
With words of brotherhood, understanding,
and kindness.
