Failing at empathy
The injustice
visited upon you
And the magnitude
of your pain
Renders mine irrelevant--
self-indulgent, even.
(Then why does it still hurt?)

Re. Failing at empathy
Dear K,
This poem has a strong resemblance to a situation I experienced and wish I hadn’t. In addition to the hurt I was mortally embarrassed by my behavior. I’m sorry felt worthless. But I was.
Lovely write depicting this emotion.

I know we can't really compare pains and trials... but damn, sometimes it's embarrassing to be hurt by something that seems trivial in the big scheme of things!
Thanks for listening to me whine.

Profound and thought provoking...
I think that empathy can be an ideal
as much as a reality...
I think it is a tricky concept...
I think that matters of the heart,
of which I consider empathy...
I think that these things are
sort of:
Do not belong.
Do not really belong in
the world of the binary...
Because...
They are pure...
And all things in this world
are made impure...
Based upon the nature
of the reality construct...

Re. Failing at empathy
What a great question. So many times, in my life, I've said "there but for the grace of God go I" when pondering other's suffering. And compared to 99% of the world my pain is minuscule. But though it varies in degree and severity our pain is pain nonetheless. We can't escape some pain in life and I think there comes a time in every life where our custom made pain become seemingly unbearable. because we all suffer pain I think it's incumbent on us to try and eleviate suffering where we can. Soapbox stowed😁
Dear K, how dare you make me think🤪 The is a beautifully writen poignant piece that reminded me of who I am and who I can be. Bravissima goddess poet🥰

Pain unites us, in a way - as long as we don't get too swallowed up in our own.
Thanks for sharing your soapbox!

You might be better at empathy than you think.
Witness your poem.
We pick our moments and do the best we can.

I dunno, no matter how hard I try at empathy, there's still a part that squeals "but what about meeee?!" Pathetic...

Dear K,
You could show bad acts towards others hurt, however small they are. I love the idea and your brevity of expression. J.Z.

Sometimes when we reach out to others and their "pain", it subtly eases our own. Because we are not dwelling on it then.
How many movies end with the hero wounded, as they exit, after saving the day. It can be taken however the viewer sees it. But, it ultimately reminds us that they too are mortal.
Sometimes, it takes the pained to understand another's pain.
Obviously there are levels of suffrage, some almost unfathomable. Yet, once we've bled ourselves, we're better at stopping the bleeding of another. Mostly, that's empathy too.
Mankind only continues because of the healers, even if they themselves are still healing.

Yes, of course it goes both ways. We can all be both healer and broken... we take turns, I guess.
I wrote this in a low, lonely moment. I had just spent several days in a rather intense conference, learning about traumas inflicted on one group of people by another.... but it was also the first anniversary of my mom's death, and I was away from home and really just wanted someone to comfort ME in my grief... and I felt like that meant I was missing the whole point of the conference... (failing at empathy...)
Sometimes the needy child inside just has to whine for a minute.
Thanks for reading & sharing your thoughts, it 's always appreciated.

We're all societal creatures, but for whatever history there may be, it clouds emotions (or heightens them) to a degree.
Interesting spill.
