Look sharp, or you'll be flat
Right.
Next on the list is F minor.
Flats, you say?
Yes, four. B, E, A and D.
We'll start with the melodic.
Coming down, it's easy -
you do what it says on the tin.
Play all of the flats,
kind of like descending in A flat major.
So what do we need to do on the way up?
Sharpen the sixth and seventh notes.
So you have D flat and E flat,
but in the melodic minor scale,
they become flatrals.
Flatrals?! I mean, naturals!
Those flats are sharpened,
resulting in naturals,
but I think I prefer our new word,
'flatrals'!
I took great care with my spelling there,
because 'flatural' looks too much like 'flatulence'.
Imagine my surprise, when up pops a friend,
telling me she has just invented the 'fartural'!
I told her I was pleased to have friends
that I can always rely on,
even if I can only rely on them to lower the tone!
Then I realised that flats also lower the tone, don't they?
(But flatrals don't...)
