Last Comp

I wasn’t sure how far the group would get that day
But I wanted to tell you, savor this moment
This may be the last time you’re all together
But I stood there quiet watching you rehearse

I observed the entire battery from the sidelines
And the way you interacted with everyone else
I bet that drum was heavy but you looked ready
This would be the last competition of the season

Then when you and the band took the field
I was cheering you on, smiling with glassy eyes
You dedicated yourself to this new activity
You had become a new person

Later that night as we all shivered in the stands
The scores weren’t the ones we had hoped for
But you’d become a part of this new family
Making special memories of your own

You sweated through the summer heat
You shivered in the fall cool nights
And no matter how tired you may have been
It was just like you said you “had a great time”

Marching season may be over
It was fast, the way it came and went
But it’s not quite the end
Because son
Get ready for indoor percussion
And this will be just as much
If not more fun
