I Dream A Dream

I dream a dream
of lunar water,
a whisper of blue
on a black background,
strewn with stars
& wide as the world,
peaceful as sapphire.

Drowsy and dreary,
I dream this dream,
bleary-eyed, petrified
by a mad Medusa:
the ravaging rays
of a soulless sun
staring into my retina.

I prefer this plane
of moonlit pleasure,
where present and future
live and last
as long as laughter,
the past is spent,
an empty lighter.

A comet green
streaking the sky,
goodbye: I dream
this dream
& won't return,
until the morn, alas,
when fire will burn
my dreamy canvas.
