The Sojourner Left Behind a Song

He did not know what he sought for,
He did not understand where he was going,
He did not hear the telling tune,
Or see the path that sorrow was showing.

Until one day he came upon a broken girl,
Whose life was bruised and torn;
And yet this stricken soul was singing,
With her heart against a thorn.

He could do nothing but stop and listen,
As her voice with sorrow unfurled,
But she sang of only light and hope,
To a grieving, weeping world.

She sang of this long journey,
Of all its joys and its pains,
And how the harshest of these storms,
Only washed away all the stains.

He felt his confusion leave him,
As he listened to this song of sweetness;
And felt his heart drift with this tune,
To a future bright with completeness.

He began to understand this journey,
This sojourn upon the earth;
Was made up of gains and losses,
That could lead us to untold worth.

He could see now that this lovely song,
Was of pain and sorrow borne,
And that his song was none the sweeter,
Than when his heart was against a thorn.
