Speak
cracked, dry lips
tight, nervous throat
daring to utter
her own wants,
her own needs;
the sound still so small
from behind
these iron bars,
this poorly welded cage
built ‘round her tongue;
cracks and fissures
in the seams
give her just enough
confidence
to whisper defiance;
her mouth will be
free, at last when
her quiet voice
grows loud enough
to scream
tight, nervous throat
daring to utter
her own wants,
her own needs;
the sound still so small
from behind
these iron bars,
this poorly welded cage
built ‘round her tongue;
cracks and fissures
in the seams
give her just enough
confidence
to whisper defiance;
her mouth will be
free, at last when
her quiet voice
grows loud enough
to scream
