4:45 A.M.

I used to be goodlooking!
But then I took an arrow to the knee
I tumbled down the rolling hill
And ended up under an ugly tree

I used to run like the wind!
But then I took a bullet to the shin
Now I’m only as fast as molasses
I’m thick and heavy to my chagrin

I used to be in great shape!
But then I started with the beer
I traded my six pack abs for kegs
Now my legs look thin and weird

I used to have all this energy!
Then I had a whole bunch of kids
Now I gotta have coffee just to make it
Otherwise all day I have sleepy eyelids

I used to see good (or well?)
Great, now I’m forgetting how to write
I didn’t want bifocals so I got progressives
Somehow I turned into my dad overnight

These lonely dark pre-dawn winter jogs
Give me a lot to think when I’m out
It’s fucking cold and I’m getting old
Damn it I forgot
What this poem was going to be about
