Work of Art
As I walked, colors started to replace my world of fragmented black outlines; my emergence from a place where identity meant conforming
Still, wouldn’t the greens envy the yellows? Could there be too many competing shades of pinks?
Contemplating, I thought I preferred the vibrant redness of the cardinal but the blue jay had gorgeous patterns in its wings
Not factoring in my opinions, they graced the sky, my approval or preferences had nothing to do (one way or the other) with their beauty, or their abilities to fly
I saw them fly to the colorless world and part of me feared for them, I expected they would lose their identities
But, they kept their colors, oblivious, never experiencing a world where judgment could strip away one’s self-assurance
So, they remained all that they were, not blending in, but each soaring through the skies, their colors vibrant
The blue jay and the cardinal returned and drank from the pond and I could see their reflections among the kaleidoscope of liquid pigments
Excited, I turned back to view the world of black lines and white spaces and it was filling in with colors
Turning again towards the pond, I saw myself, but not just myself, everything was clear to me
Somehow my colors were not muted, I was an individual my reflection luminous, no longer a simple line on a page without substance, but a work of art
It is easy to get lost in a world where the need for approval defines you, recognizing your own value makes your colors stand out, vibrant and confident

Possibly the most empowering poem I've ever read. You did not preach or teach or narrate but with prose and poise guided me into a beautiful world of being. I'm jealous of this poem [your looks too but I digress] but I won't hold your writing or looks against you. I Love this more than words can say.

Dear HoS, I was trying to convey a message of empowerment, and I love that this guided you into a beautiful world of being! That was also my intention and I thank you for mentioning it! The wonderment of the world is quite beautiful once we take our blinders off and really look.

Yes that is true, it’s easy to lose ourselves trying to live up to everything the world places on us. Thank you, Tim!

Echo Heart_of_Stone, this is so empowering and you guided me into a world of beauty without judgement. Soaring high in the sky with such vibrancy where you can appreciate and love yourself completely for who you are. Where you can fill in your brightest and most gorgeous colors by being you. Being sensitive your message really resonated strongly with me. Still in awe of your incredible talent and this poem. You are definitely a work of art to behold. I love the colors and the transition from the black and white. Spectacular.

Well this is very reflective and insightful. I will ponder ordinary things with new found wonder to the world around me. Its a great reset going into this time of being thankful for the little things that make a life special and fulfilled. I live the layering of meaning in this piece. It has a way of sneaking up on you. Great Read.

What a wonderful read. It is very empowering.
To know your worth and color it too.

Dear NG,
Wonderful poem. For me, the idea of clarity and beauty of oneself evolving via nature was an awesome metaphor. As in nature we’re not just one simple shade but many and all equally beautiful. I used to think only the reds were pretty but then I realized they were gorgeously offset by the yellows, oranges and greens of the other leaves. And then there were the flowers…the endless array of colors and varieties…you’ve brilliantly captured self appreciation and love throughout this poem. It’s really lovely. And the artwork, as per, is fantastic. H🌷

Dear Honoria, I’m so happy to see you!
Part of this poem was inspired by the changing leaves of the fall, similarly as you described. None of the colors were less noticeable because there were so many; actually the opposite. I am so happy you feel the idea of clarity and beauty of oneself evolving via nature was an awesome metaphor! Thank you for your beautiful comment.

It's a great moral story, NightGoddess. It's nice that the birds kept hold of their identity, enen in the colorless World.

Just found this beautiful piece! The amazing art and gorgeous words really complement each other. Anything that discusses colour gets a big thumbs up from me. We are each our own unique mix of yellows, pinks, blues and so on. Nobody is quite the same!
