Things I Told You

I told you I wanted to write about the stars
You said, will you put me in them
Like a constellation made from the headlights of cars
That we saw from the back of the truck
When we laid there
In the country
On that back road
Our lights off
Our fires on

I told you I wanted to write about the space
You said, the space between you and I
That chasm sometimes deep and wide
We sometimes call to each other over it
When we are far apart
In different states
On back roads
Our lights off
Our fires on

I told you I wanted to write about the night
You said you wondered about those nights
Future nights that we would share
With no sheets between us, lying bare
When we can just breathe each other’s air
In the same place
On a back road
Our lights off
Our fires on

I told you I wanted to write about the song
You said, will you put my name in it
Like the hero who sets you free
And lets you just be, be everything you want to be
When we are together or apart
In each other’s arms
On some back road
Our lights off
Our fires on

If I told you, I’d write about you
What would you say then, would you sit in silence
Waiting for the words to come
With baited breath and hovering hearts
When that ink drips raw and fresh
Down the back road of your spine
With all the lights on
With all the fires blazing

What would you say then
What would you do after
If I told you I’d write for you
And the stars, in the night, in a song
Deep in the space
Between everything
Between us
