Theresienstadt Ghetto Symphony
( After Rita Dove )
Some played harmoniously
in the face of tragedy;
others, absurdly out of sync
regardless of advantages
Despite how we observe
or innately judge. . .
both inevitably belonged—
captive and guard
Inside each cavernous soul
exists a desire to complement
the mastery of music—
to be fondly remembered
a dedicated creator, or just part
of something greater—
as space between notes
holding sound together—
to taste the rarity of beauty
from a vast hunger;
our biorhythm surviving
the odds of injustice—
defiantly humming
in gratitude
If music be the food of love
play on.*

This poem is great in its entirety but my mind is fixated to this verse...
"as space between notes
holding sound together—"

omg ... the inspiration behind this is truly both saddening and disturbing.
This is haunting as surely as the melodies that echo throughout the property felt by visitors in the solar plexus and hair raising on the backs of necks.
You made music out of something miserable just as those unfortunate souls did.

Thank you. The holocaust was an absolute blight on humanity's score card. That some say it didn't occur is absolutely insane. But, there are those who would believe it. A lie told often enough becomes the truth, doesn't it?
Thank you always for your love and support. ❤

Just amazing A...I have read some of her work...a wonderful tribute. As Nietzsche said...A life without music, is a life not worth living. I love classical music...if listening to Bach doesn't bring a little serenity then nothing will. My favorite piece of music is "Lark Ascending" by the great Vaughn Williams. Here's a link to the Nigel Kennedy playing the piece...violin perfection.

That was beautiful, my friend. I love the composition but had never seen that particulalr performance before now. Classical ( including movie scores ) moves my soul moreso than any other music; I have so many favorites, but among them are Barber's Adagio for Strings, Beethoven's Fur Elise, Chopin's Moonlight Sonata, Rachmaninoff's Rhapsody on the Theme by Paganini. . .aaaand I'll stop now or will type my entire playlist!
Re: Re. Theresienstadt Ghetto Symphony
Haha...I love them all A...Beethoven, Bach and Vivaldi are alwys my go to in my CD collection...but I do have a soft spot for Satte and his piano.
Have you ever listened to The Two Cellos? Here is one of my fa clips, Mozart meets the Australian heavies...ACDC. Lol

Truly wonderful Ahavati, you pique our interests with these poets and competitions.
I was listening to a couple of Rita's poems online and I can't wait to dive into this comp as well.
I want to wish you a Happy Birthday and hope that despite all craziness going around the world, that you're having a wonderful day.

Thank you, Wally! Much appreciated ( both the comments and the birthday wishes ). I am happy you are resonating with Dove. She is yet another phenomenal writer.

Wow powerful Ahavati
Had to look up Theresienstadt, I hadn’t read about this particular atrocity until now.
I think you catch real feeling in this poem and the line
‘As space between notes
holding sound together ‘
That line is gold, reminds me of that Japanese philosophy/art of space and pause, which for the life of me I can’t remember
Top write Ahavati 😀👍👌

Ah' yes. MUSIC! after 40 years of performance, All Gone. That's the breaks, sonny'boy'
You post was so musically oriented, I thought there was a Rita Dove musician that i new naught of. I have no clue about musicians that have surfaced in over two years now. When i lost my technique, I lost all desire to keep up on the "music news". And what the heck is "Theresienstadt"
Yup. Ms Dove is one of them powerhouse poets.
Gosh...She's only 5 weeks younger than me. I always thought she'd be much younger'n me.
This piece is a most worthy paean.

Thank you, Danny. I appreciate your observations greatly.
Yes, Dove is definitely a powerhouse poet. I have really enjoyed studying her. We've discovered some great poets throughout this series.

Must admit, . Ha.I'm not really familiar with her work except by name. I guess i'm prejudiced toward "poet laureates". Just jealous I guess. O'well..........

I have been reading Rita and I'm pretty mesmerized by her range. She is at times a black Sylvia Plath with poetic structure and mystique, and yet has so many different poetic forms at other times. I found the adolescent poems all on one page with different interpretations and that shed some light on her essence. I am working on a short and a long poem. The music theme you highlighted seems to have a soulful depth to it, almost as if it is her theme for life.

I'm happy you caught that, PR ( in regards to the music theme ). It's exactly what I felt when I reached this poem. It seemed to culminate pieces of her other works in some way that I'm unsure I could explain, but definitely felt.
I am very anxious to see your contributions this month! We have really had some powerhouse poets this year ( not that we haven't in previous years ), but more less known yet just as powerful as the well-known classic poets ( sometimes much more because of their free-verse vs structured form ).

I found her poem, 'Soprano' and it seems to follow that music as soul theme as well. I have really wanted to learn how to write free verse, it's something I've wanted to strive for, it seems to me the hardest form to do right, so the poets we've been studying this past year have been a great exercize in that. It's like surfing, so liberating once you get the jist, but not before. It's worth the effort :)

Yes, indeed. It is our divine blueprint that always makes us long for creating, expanding, leaving an important mark in the world, contributing, leading a meaningful life, even.

This poem brings to mind the question of free will, and how much talent belongs to the beholder’s innate genetic makeup (or biorhythm, as you put it), and how much their own hard work. I’m beginning to appreciate more how you express difficult scientific/philosophical concepts in verse.

Thank you, Jack. I do believe that science is a large part of both philosophical beliefs as well as spirituality. For me, anyway. I do believe some have an innate gift ( take the three-year-old who can play Bach or Chopin on the piano ) that really shines through their talents when they apply themselves from the heart.
Thank you! xo
