the vintage of summer trees

walking through the
zoo,

stopping, watching
the giraffes.

their necks stretching like
taffy to find the tree tops
to sample the most succulent
leaves vintaged by summer.

around me families smile,
laugh.

their voices kind, friendly.

their faces beautiful in
the afternoon
sunlight.

there is no perfection, but
this day is as close as
it's ever going to be.

and inside of me,
somewhere, one
single small flower
begins to
open.
