Image for the poem I AM A MAN

I AM A MAN

You have hope and faith; mines are in their graves
My actions, to you, may seem depraved
Disengaged from many things I use to enjoy
Feeling dejected and apathetic without a ploy

Deployed my troops in boots to countless wars
Battle fatigued from going on consecutive tours
Unable to restore flames to torches once illuminated
Consumed by darkness and that's not debated

Elated that my wife's tumors aren't malignant
Impending surgery and we'll get through it
Energy is spent on these trials and tribulations
Wondering what next will enter the equation

A mathematician couldn't calculate the sum
Toll has me feeling anesthetized and numb
Yet, my drum's still beating in my marching band
Won't become a defeatist 'cause I AM A MAN
