The Business of Sorting Laundry

my heart wants
to tell you
about the sunrise
I witnessed
while laying in bed
with the windows
wide open,
shivering to stay warm
in the chilly morning air
of Fall, approaching

I’m tempted to whisper,
ever so softly
against your neck
whatever beautiful
~w o r d s~
I can dig from
the coffers
of Webster’s finest
to convey the magic
of every moment
I spent in your arms

I want to drag you
inside of my thoughts
and place my hand
over your heart,
feeling the beat
pick up tempo
as I watch,
gloriously spellbound
when your face
radiates with understanding,
leaving your eyes glazed
in the afterglow
when I am finally
finished

but my brain
won’t leave
this laundry alone,
feeling sorry
for the chaos
of tangled fabrics
waiting to be put
in their places,
jumbled entanglements
making wrinkles
I’ll have to iron out
later;
I pad down
this boring hallway
to begin the business
of sorting and folding,
preparing to put
you away
