Journey of the Ordinary

one foot in front of the other,
winds race wildly across the plains
whipping my hair into a frenzy;
sand from painted canyons
growing old
attacks my unprotected cheeks,
mounting a stinging, angry defense

this season has been impossibly hard

my thoughts wander every bit
as aimlessly as I do,
finding us both in a field
in the middle of somewhere
out in the middle of nowhere

a plain white styrofoam cup,
the kind found on cheap tables
in basement group meetings
where coffee is stale
and words are cloying and heavy,
tumbles across my vision
in a long, erratic series
of comic-strip somersaults

what random chaos
happening upon my path
has bound us together
within this precise moment,
where I wandered about with no intent
except to clear my cluttered head?
the chances must be nothing short
of cosmic

I snack lazily on dried cranberries,
my starved imagination stirring

were you held between nervous hands
while pain, thick and intimate
spilled out from shaky voices
above you?

moments of staring down
at my own anxious, trembling fingers
-warmed to calm by the likes of you-
while I spoke unsteady words
floods my chest,
making my feet sluggish

I still hold a mug this way to speak truth

did you endure the vacant stare
of worried eyes and wrinkled brow
as they waited for word
and contemplated every outcome?

I’m looking over the thin, stark rim
blue, paper-covered shoes advance
while my broken heart retreats,
knowing he’s carrying devastation
in his mouth above me

I don’t look up for a long time

another moment passes

          ...or maybe it was ten

now free of obligation to stay still,
-a silent witness to our frailty-
the journey of the ordinary
continues across the field
to a final destination
neither of us can anticipate

one foot in front of the other,
I make my way home
