Paralysis
In the dark I lie awake
Dreaming of nightmares I cannot shake.
I feel a presence creeping over me
But I cannot turn my head to see.
Who is this faceless demon that turns my muscles to stone?
Only a few more seconds now...He will be gone.
Dreaming of nightmares I cannot shake.
I feel a presence creeping over me
But I cannot turn my head to see.
Who is this faceless demon that turns my muscles to stone?
Only a few more seconds now...He will be gone.

I liked that contrast in the first stanza, dreaming of nightmares while awake. And just like that, in a few seconds it's gone, but leaving a lasting impression.
Well done Nicole.

I started getting sleep paralysis when I was 19 (sophomore year of college was particularly stressful). I was 100% convinced I was being haunted by a demon. Now I can wake myself up out of it...still a very unpleasant experience every time.
Thank you for the welcome! I am new to sharing my work so this has felt like a very welcoming place to dip my toes in the water.

Absolutely. I have quite a few pieces touching on my experience with sleep paralysis. Some of it defies logic and our perception of reality. Down right frightening!

My roommate at the time (who is an Atheist and doesn't believe in any kind of spiritual/supernatural realm whatsoever) thought I had completely lost my mind.

Haha I completely agree with that! I'm managing a two story restaurant while working on my Master's so I lose my mind on a daily basis. I'd be lying if I said there weren't times I walked into my office after dealing with customers or my employees and just screamed at my desk, then walked back out! lol

Well good thing we have our words for therapy(and screaming) behind closed doors. Lol. I could imagine the knuckleheads you deal with on a daily basis.I am gonna try and dig up the poems I have in regards to my sleep paralysis. If I decide not to post them publicly I'll just send em to you. My ex and I, for many nights straight would have simultaneous sleep paralysis to the point we slept in shifts or didn't sleep at all. There's quite a story thats a little long for the moment but I will tell you sometime if you're genuinely interested . I will look for it now

I'd love to read them! You know, they say that the apparitions we see during sleep paralysis are a manifestation of our worst fear...and personally I think there is some truth to that.
