The Vortex
On hallowed ground I walk, unphased by those who came before me
Unafraid of what lies ahead, terrified of the ghosts walking behind me.
Time is frozen, but the days keep going by
Maybe I’m just frozen, eclipsed by the beautiful lie
That every road leads to somewhere you’ve never been
But maybe this road is a vortex, banishing me back to where I’ve already been.
Humbled and proud, which will be my demise?
Am I too proud to look my weakness in the eyes?
Or will my insignificance cause me to fade
Into the dust where all my dreams are laid.
Just as the unearthed depth of the ocean, my future is unknown.
Will I outrun the ghosts of my past, or will their presence chill me to the bone?
Their haunting cries consume me
Telling me of the greats I will never be.
Maybe one day I’ll be stronger,
Afraid of their taunts no longer.
This vortex keeps spinning, around and around it goes.
But my will is growing stronger, even as colder my heart grows.
