Rumpelstiltskin And The Witches

The wheel-horse, wilful and eager
dragged the cart with its hard seats
and heavy wrought-iron frame over the bumpy track
up the windswept hill while the witches
stuffed wadding under their bony bottoms
to soften the jarring bounces
thinking to worship the weaver
who, grinning, offered his new ware,
a cape from spun gold for a high price of sacrifice
but the witches with a wry smile
had also brought with them a wreath
and suddenly switched plans.
