The New Puerto Rico
Maria,
There is a new wind that blows in Puerto Rico
Flags fly on Borinqueñ breath
Mi gente, canta!
Chants channel a rain dance of democracy,
demonstrate dignity,
deliver a name our children can be proud of.
Rosselló, no more!
It’s not enough to know our heritage
Trump we built a wall to combat sacrilege
out of light skin and dark skin
out of the power of women
Out of gay men and straight men
and humans
that share the same goals.
in memory of the thousands of Tiano souls.
We figuratively and literally became the path,
the barricade against bigotry
the barrio bridge to bank & brighter days, stopping for piraguas on our way
because we will never lose our taste
for freedom.
