Quatern Nr.04 — Far-Right Populist Leaders
The populist leaders appeal
to unresolved issues in folk
corrupting the sense of what’s real
then tighten the noose of the yoke
nostalgic the picture they paint
the populist leaders appeal
to loosening norms of restraint
encouraging Fascist ideals
as freedoms are lost in the deal
with latent emotional need
the populist leaders appeal
to violent expression - and feed
the sense-of-abandonment itch
that’s festering, oozing to heal -
a sensitive button to which
the populist leaders appeal
and whipping up terrible zeal
minority power is felt
the populist leaders appeal
to changing the cards they were dealt
with everyday masses appalled
the populist leaders appeal
to old-time religion enthralled
with progress they want to repeal
the populist leaders appeal
to symbols they dig from the past
and cranking a turn of the wheel
praise God for the lot they were cast.

Oooh! That's cool... and well said, too...I love the ''mirror image'' concept...
why not? adds a little ''bounce'' to your poem. Hugs, Ely
Do have a grammatical bone to pick, though.
In S1, L4, the word would be *yoke* if I read the context correctly...
I am assuming we are not talking about an egg...but rather, a contrivance, for attaching to... ;D

Thank you for the 'yoke' correction - (just wiping the egg off my face).
Felt today I was flagging a bit for ideas for NaPo; for me it's always easier to work to a form, rather than freestyle. I got to the end of the quatern and then thought, why not go back again. Did so; then it didn't make sense with the 'add-on' so rewrote it from scratch. I thought it was kinda cool - glad you think so too.

Josh this is NaPo; you have no egg to wipe off your face. It's amazing you're writing this quality of work daily.
This is a double quatern! Amazing!

Thank you Ahavati. The poem was sparked by reading about the Italian far-right guy who wants to initiate a 'pan-European' far-right movement. What I find scary is how easily people are drawn into it - but it's that mechanism of "appeal" I was trying to put my finger on in the poem.
{a double-quatern ... hmm ... I have thrown down the gauntlet :)) }

Josh that was amazing. I think you captured what many see and you put it so elegantly.
Great work.

Thank you Wallyroo for the complement - as per reply to Ahavati, I was trying to nail how these guys succeed in the 'appeal'.

Your experiment pays off, Josh. I love what you do with the quatern form, and use of rhyme. But, perhaps more importantly, you take complex political themes and do wonders. Well done!

Thank you Crow. I was reading about "Poet's Respond" (run by the poetry magasine "Rattle") and winding myself up for a submission. Like cartoons which 'nail it in one', I like the idea of poets doing the same, with just words.
Talking of 'just words', you might like to check out Simon Armitage's poem "Zoom".

Nigel Farage and Annunziata Rees-Mogg - I thought these type of people only belonged in the worlds of Monty Python or The Goons. How wrong can one be - I've must have spent too much time abroad.

I think you just blew Magnetron's processor with this one.

I hope the operation to replace the CPU was a success - and was covered in the insurance policy. :))

Thank you so much for the complement - and RL. My father and grand-father each fought a war to keep these types of guys - and their warped thinking - at bay. Now it's my turn :)) (sort of)

It is a scary world we now find ourselves in with blatant racism in the age of Trump
There seems to such brazen acts of violence that are now being worn as a badge of honour
Dog whistling is nothing more than a garnish to their already cooked and served dish
The future is so close to scenes from The Purge to the point of the movie being prophetic

Hi Laluma, thank you for reading and commenting - and the RL too is much appreciated. Yes, the world has gone quite scary - it's as if a global fog has descended, blotting out common sense.
Not seen the film "The Purge" but I've read Alexander Solzhenítsyn, George Orwell, and others who have pointed out how the slippery-slope into authoritarianism happens, so I can imagine.
I see you've recently joined DUP..., welcome. Best regards, Josh.
