Extinction (haiku)
Perched in an oak tree
The last bird sings for a mate
That will never come
The last bird sings for a mate
That will never come
Author's Note
This heartfelt poem was inspired by true events, and was written after watching the documentary, 'Racing Extinction'. I implore you to watch the touching scene that inspired the poem, here:

If we continue neglect our responsibility to take proper care of this planet, one by one, each species will be eradicated from this planet, including ourselves.

Thank you for your time, LilDragonFly. Your comment and compliment are deeply appreciated!
It is a heartbreaking topic to write about, indeed. It's a little depressing, but I implore you to watch the documentary that inspired this poem if you have the time. You can find it in YouTube for free, I think, just search 'Racing Extinction'.
Anyway, thanks again for stopping by!

You made me smile with your compliments. I am so happy to know that I am not alone, and that there's still many people who care about the well-being of our planet and the millions of species that dwell upon it. I guess I've become a bit cynical...
Also, I wasn't sure if people would actually read the author's note, so thanks for the reassurance :P
Anyway, thanks again, Hunter, for your wonderful feedback!

Hey NewB,
Awesome, my friend, and thanks for the explanation, it adds meaning and beauty(and sadness), to a nicely written Haiku.
Great job!
MZ.

Thank you for your feedback and your nice compliments, Orenda. Dwelling on these type of thoughts too often gives me a sense of deep melancholy that is hard to shake.
Re. Extinction (haiku)
to comment or not to comment, because this pulls the heart strings even while the instrument may have a discordance..the sound of this poem is relatable; but the hearts of many(especially mine) more or less distorted. (I'm sure you understand) where I'm coming from)

Hey Zaynab, thanks for stopping by!
I am a bird lover as well. Birding is actually a huge hobby of mine (that's what enthusiast usually call it).
I hadn't even thought of the Dodo, but thanks for bringing it up. I'm not sure if you saw the author's note, but if you missed it, you should check out the video :)

Thanks for the heartfelt comment, WhispersWeKeep. I agree, it is pretty upsetting.
When I first saw that clip a couple of years ago, I was close to tears. It's just so sad. The way the guy was worded the story was so tragically beautiful, comparing the voices of the birds of this Earth to the instruments in an orchestra, which are being silenced - one by one - as we drive them towards extinction...

Everything you could want in a haiku. Lovey, succinct, and powerful. You’re left feeling fat after you’re done reading.
