On Poetic Forms, Nr.02 (Limericks: Theory & Practice)
LIMERICKS - THE THEORY
1.(a) A Limerick's stuck with five lines
2.(a) with three of them having to rhyme -
3.(b) the other two too
4.(b) must rhyme with a view
5.(a) to finalise something sublime.
LIMERICKS - THE PRACTICE
Cleanliness is next to Godlessness
Try keeping a Limerick clean
and you're stuffed (you know what I mean)
for Limerick lines
have singular minds -
disorderly, bawdy, obscene.

Author's Note
Number 2 in a series on Poetic Forms, including both Theory and Practice. The first poem uses the form itself to explain the 'Theory' of the form. The second poem uses the form as a random 'Practice' example. (On Poetic Forms - 1, covered Quaterns, and was published yesterday [30th Nov, 2018]).

Reminds me of an experience.
When I first started submitting poetry online I answered a call for a limirck contest.
After submitting a couple of works that could be, in my opinion, rated PG 13, I received a note from the contest sponsor shaming me for submitting a bawdy poem.
I replied, pointing out that limericks 'are bawdy.'

Thanks for commenting snugglebuck.
"I replied, pointing out that limericks 'are bawdy.' "
... that's right.
According to my definitive book on Limericks (in 1968 that is, "The Lure of the Limerick" by W.S. Baring-Gould) 'bawdy' is the most apt descriptive word. Indeed the book has the sub-title 'The Bawdy World-Wide Bestseller'.

This started as a Limerick
There was a girl called Naomi,
who'd swallow any baloney.
We would all be shot by Cupid
if only she wasn't stupid.
Good looks and brains, oh if only.
but the form isn't quite right in lines 3 and 4 (too many feet); so I'm thinking of doing something else with it.

... in the meantime Naomi might have joined #MeToo, so beware - but then again, limericks are traditionally non-P.C.
The first two lines would scan better as:
There was a young girl called Naomi
who swallowed a load of baloney...
(after that it's over to you. - I'm outta here)

Poor Naomi ...
what has she done to deserve this ?
You know, this would make a good poetry competition.
Thanks for your lines, really liked them.

That's part of what I love about them! :-)

If I did a real traditional limerick it would most probably have to be placed behind the curtain of 'extreme content' :))

Limericks are something I never quite got the hang of. I feel compelled to cram them with additional rhymes and my syllable counts are always way off.

Thanks for reading Johnny. My father loved limericks so I guess my ear was attuned from an early age. But I suppose like most poetry, it's highlights the eternal challenge to weed out superfluous words - and given a strict form, to make it fit without looking one tried too hard.

Thank you Jemac, maybe there's some more on the way (I'll consult my muse tonight). :))

I like this as much as the one you did about quaterns. You seem to be experimenting, stretching your wings as they say, and showing your true versatility. Still more fine work.

Thank you again Crowfly. I've been trying to do one on villanelles but it's not going too well. Time to go to bed now and sleep on it. :))
