Being tolerated is never enough. There has to be a component of mutual joy. That's what I get from this, but I may be off base. In any case, I love these three lines.

You're spot-on Sir Crow. The idea of being cared for solely out duty and not real loving regard is quite a conundrum. On the one hand your temporal needs are met but, on the other, ones yearnings for compassion and affection are not.

I agree, but I would also add, there is a component of obligation.
The saddest love is one with obligation without joy-- but sadder still is when the lack of joy results in rejected obligation. I know that all too well...
