Dream for a Friend

Dream for Friend

Vaulted ceiling encloses us
In a cavern of quiet
Under a bony batwing roof
With illustrated membrane
High above our haloed heads
Like the night sky overhead
Beyond our cathedral silence
In a Natchez of the heart
Judy sits in front of me in her pew
Just us two in the solitude of a temple
Where faith finds a home
For those who cling to the idea of a God
But for us meditation rather than prayer
Judy comes from the Jewish tradition
I am a lost practitioner of Luna Moth worship
I tell her how my old lover
Wanted me to wear a yarmulke in the synagogue
Judy laughs and says, “It would look good on you.”
We walk the thorny path of darkness
To ride our bus of dreams to New Orleans
Our galleon with wheels
Takes us past the synagogue
“Judy, the inside is so beautiful”
But she is fast asleep
As our ship rolls on tires upon an asphalt web
Past trees silhouetted in sodium light
