An Eastwood Dilemma
Spied some baby kits today,
out in my neighbor's yard, at play.
Snuck off our porch, to behind a tree,
for a better place at which to be.
Turned around, twin fawns I see,
watching with curiosity.
Still as statues, three groups of us,
the fawns and I, and those cute pups.
Mexican Standoff, it reminded me,
The Good, the Bad, and the U-g-ly.
Author's Note
Non-fictional occurrence from a few years ago, Fawns and kits, are raised in a small woods behind our home each spring, for it is a safe haven for wildlife in a residential area. This particular interaction was within about 15 yards of each other and lasted about 5 minutes, with none of us wishing to leave first.

It was indeed, a most beautiful moment, and when they tired of me, they just went on their merry way. Very surreal. Even the grown seem content to winter there, feeling it safe, and unafraid of us as well.
Barbee, my pet lab, has become accustom to wildlife in the area, and does not bother them anymore after I scolded her a few times for barking at them, though she wants to go play with them.
Thank you, my friend, for the notice of the milestone.

It was one of those moments in time that rarely happens. None of them seem particularly disturbed, more as fascinated with me, as I was them.
The kits (baby fox) were the first to return to the wood line, then a few minutes later, the twin fawns sauntered off, fairly nonchalantly, grazing as they went. I think of the encounter often when I'm out mowing the area.
Thanks for the read, glad you enjoyed.

Teri, The famous movie scene is a perfect metaphor for this much more beautiful standoff. I can just picture the camera switching from alert fawn eyes to vigilant kit eyes to yours staring in wonder. The Ennio Morricone trumpets playing. So who flinched first? A clever well painted vignette of a natural encounter. Bravisima! You made my day...he says in his best Eastwood (Blondey) impression.

I so love your comments when you grace my page with your presence.
Yes, your description of the scene is spot on, none of us moving a muscle, eyes switching from group to group. Then slowly, as tensions eased, minor adjustments in stance. I sort of felt like Tuco, standing on the cross, and yes, he and I both sporting the same moniker, lol.
The kits, (3 of them), flinched first, scampering back into the undergrowth, then the fawns, leisurely moving away.
"You feel lucky?, well ,do ya punk?" (I certainly did, and they too, I'm sure, though probably in a different sense.)
Much appreciate your parking a comment on this piece, my friend.

There's two kinds of people in this world the kind that merely read and the kind that write...WRITE!

Much agreed on one of the best, though 'Unforgiven" ranks right up there in my book also, simply for the depth of human emotions portrayed in the movie, The scene: Hackman..."I didn't deserve this, I was building a house.", Eastwood..."We all deserve it." ...........BAM!
Cold justice delivered.
I believe I wandered off point, LOL.
Thank you, my friend, it really, truly, means a lot when you visit

Clint Eastwood has always been a personal hero. The real, no nonsense tough guy of my era. Unforgiven has been my favorite of his films for a long time though now it might be Gran Torino, which has such heart and depth of meaning. Always hold a soft spot for The Good, the Bad and the Ugly.
It's a curious encounter you describe and I enjoy the playful way you elucidate it. I find it salient on various levels of interaction as also with people. We sort of just size each other up at first too. You never really know where a new encounter is going to go.

Gran Torino is indeed another good Eastwood movie, showing first impressions are not our fineness, either in observance or presentation. One should always let such things simmer for awhile before settling in on a judgment, and even then, those judgments some are so quick to embrace, turn out to be wrong.
I have met some wonderful people, even here on DU, that I would never have guessed would blossom into friendships.
Thank you, Daniel, for the critique and comment, both are appreciated.

I feel the memory of that moment will be with me forever, for it was surreal and unexpected.
And, thank you for the link. Just so happens I lived in El Paso for three years and spent many enjoyable times with friends, native to Mexico, along with many trips across the border into Juarez. It is where I was introduced to Senor Jose Cuervo and the race to the worm, some of which I won, or lost, depending on perspective. LOL
Now, there are some more memories, drawn from the depths.
Truly appreciate the visit, poetrician.

I'm sure mine was more along the lines of amazement, fading to serenity, where as theirs were puzzlement, changing to OK, what's next. All in all, a learning experience for each of us.
Always enjoy your stopping by for a visit, my friend.

Ah I do miss the years of living closer to wildlife, observing is silence as the deer grazed and pheasants waddled the well-worn paths. Lovely portrayal poetess, brought me back to younger years =)

I'm glad it took you down memory lane for a quite break.
Though many times I get the opportunity to sit and observe, this was a rare and unexpected occurrence. The kits had no idea I watching them until the fawns happened upon us and the kits saw them and then me.
Thanks for stopping by, it's appreciated.

We could use a lot more hippies in the world.
Bet your itching to get back to the forest, my friend, I know I've missed your pieces on it.
Thank you, David.
