I Dare You

I stay
Under the shade of night,
Awake -
Sink
On an empty mattress
With a heart, with a body -
That aches and craves and undulates,
Beating
To the symphonies
Only I
Can hear.

I am chasing breaths and little deaths
In little nights that crash around me -
The little lights are yet to find me -
And these hands are bare dreaming
Of you and yours.

Lips whisper pleas to the hollow air
Hoping you will hear, hoping
That you'll speak -
This time
Hoping that you'll steal the words
As your own.
As I -
Yours.
Hoping that you'll drown every noise…
With a kiss.

I stay
Under the not quite shame of desperateness,
Aware -
Sink in the emptiness
With a heart, with a body -
Still aching, still craving, thrashing -
Beating
To the symphonies
I can only wish to truly hear
Tonight and every
Night.

I move to the commands of phantoms.
I sway to the thoughts of us.

Dancing in the dark,
I wonder about
All the ways we can come apart.

But where are you now?
Go on,
Find me,

I dare you.

This poem started with these lines, inspired by my own college girl infatuations:

"Dancing in the dark,
I wonder about
All the ways we can come apart."

The lines popped in my thoughts months ago while on the way to school, and as I wrote the rest of the poem just recently, it took a darker tone than I first intended it to have. It also was supposed to end with the question - but having found the perfect song, I added these lines:

"Go on,
Find me,

I dare you."
