Tunnel Vision

The glasses I wear enable my sight
But what I see can't be fixed with a prescription
Though people still try,
You can't "fix" who you are inside

When people talk I put in my hearing aids
Because I know what they say is not what they mean.
Even though we're all individually made,
We live more like robots programmed with "I'm good, and you?"s
And over simplified dreams

When I was young I was told to reach for stars
As I got older that become "be realistic!"
Those stars are reduced to a good 9-5
Those dreams are now stability and good school districts

They call this generation "millennials"
Birthed at the turn of the century.
We have the opportunity for change,
And a duty to the future to set ourselves free

Stop reaching for stars, and reach for galaxies
Appreciate your abnormalities
Enjoy what little time we have

Because as cliché as it is,
Tomorrow isn't promised (especially to us)
As the sun sets on baby boomers and childhoods,
Tomorrow is our chance to live.
