Letting Go - - - inspired by nightbirdblue
He wags his tail
He bounds around
He’s always pleased to see me
In his own way he smiles
He gives doggy kisses
He comes and sits beside me
Warm, furry and soft
He sleeps on my lap
He is man’s best friend
He is my best friend
His name was Scrapps
My canine kid
They found a tumour
The vet removed it
He seemed to be on the mend
But he was different
But my love never wavered
The tumour returned
This time inoperable
He was in pain
So much pain
He looked at me
He said ‘let me go’
I couldn’t watch him suffer
The vet performed what
He called a kindness
And Scrapps was gone
We euthanise or animal friends
We can’t bare their suffering
Yet our human loves are
Allowed to suffer
Pain and indignity
Death for some is a
Blessed release
Let them go
Afford them the same
Release as you would
A pet that you love
The heartbreak is the same
But you’ve done the right thing
Anything else
Is cruelty

So much sweetness here, my God...the ol' eyes are getting misty :') Also, nightbirdblue is a total sweetheart <3 I agree with the statement you made too, the only right decision sometimes is letting it end. Manu hugs!

for humans
have religion
and animals
not.
societies even if they call
themselves secular
do lean back
at it as their foundation.
[nope, no intention of turning this work into a forum of religion bashing or a religious debate- just mentioning the reason for the predicament of humans]
humane
is the act
of letting go
some believe
and who are we to judge.
expression
is deep
and deeply moving.

So heartbreakingly true David. My dog Max had a brain tumor and it was so hard to let him go. He was a member of our family for 13 years. I loved him like a little brother and even 35 years later I still love him. It was a terribly difficult decision but had to be done to end his suffering. We should all have that chance, to die with dignity! JJ

Aaack! The pain in these words...! Wiping tears and sending hugs. I have nothing of value to add. Many hugs!

David I'm so sorry for your lose. I have been there more than once with both dogs and a cat.
It is never ever easy but I knew is was right Though my mind fought it, my heart won out.
Take solace in the fact you did so.

This is why I come down on the side of assisted suicide. I know it is a slippery slope, but when one is beyond the help of science and only suffering remains, shouldn’t we do the same for all our loved ones. I have lost many loved fur children and if I was suffering like they did I would hope for the same chance at mercy, honor, and dignity.
Thank you for the write.

for me that is how inspiration stars - a comment, a conversation, a poem, one word, it can come from anywhere when you are tunes in or just a bit crazy - I'll let you decide which one I am (lol) thank you for the inspiration, the read and your understanding :-)

I am repeatedly inspired just by being involved with a community like DU! Still can’t believe I hadn’t found this place sooner :) Great place and people for contemplation and discovery!
Personally, I am both tuned in AND a lil crazy lol

a little crazy is always good if you are a poet and you are a poet so it goes without saying (lol) I kinda hate it when people moan about DU - it is full of inspiration and inspirational people :-)
