Chasing the Sun

Up at 3am
Long before the birds
Sing to first light
She sits behind the wheel,
Turning onto deserted roadways
Street lights flash red and yellow
Illuminating the dark in
Glossy shadows, kisses against
The sky
This is her time

To take in the freedom
Her foot pressing down
Putting the pedal to the metal
She weaves her way onto the open
Highway, this her only race track
Her Red Baron cruising smoothly
Across roads dark as the night
She races towards the dawn

Time clicks by
She waits for that ethereal curtain
To fall heavy on the horizon
Casting the morning into a darker
Shade of dark
Where the night echoes its
Descent behind opening doors
Almost in defiance of the light
Coming to surface

The entire landscape changes
There is a flicker of green
The stars begin to fade on the
Horizon,  shades of pinks and yellows erupt across the vast row of mountains
She climbs steadily, the road a mere valley
Cutting through hillsides, turning and curving toward the light

She embraces the thrill of the chase
Long shadows begin to emerge
Mist hangs in the laps of hillsides
Cows and horses, silhouettes against
Dewy grass and shaded barns

She is less alone now, more cars have given into the chase, she climbs steadily
Through a ravine of mountains, tall
Shadows against the sky, rock faces glistening on both sides,
She can see the sky lighting up
Before her in shades of deep vermilion
Cutting through the tree line
Splintering through branches

The road curving into a sharp left
Where two mountain peaks are
Suddenly before her
The sun rises, a giant red fire ball
Kissing the sky
